A position supporting daily family life will require a different package from one involving frequent formal entertaining or travel between several residences. Defining these expectations before recruitment begins helps establish a realistic budget and attract suitable candidates.

The gross salary is the employee’s pay before tax and deductions. Employer costs, recruitment fees and any accommodation or travel expenses need to be budgeted for separately.

Two positions with the same job title can involve very different levels of responsibility. When setting a salary, consider what the role requires in practice.

Experience and specialist skills
Formal dining service, wine knowledge, valet care and experience within similar private households can influence the package needed to attract the right person.

Working hours and coverage
Regular evening service, weekends and frequent entertaining affect the demands of the position. Agreeing a clear schedule also helps establish whether one appointment can provide the coverage your household needs.

Travel and multiple residences
A butler who regularly accompanies the family or prepares different properties for their arrival needs flexibility and organisational skill. Travel arrangements, accommodation and associated expenses should be considered alongside salary.

Living arrangements
For a live-in position, the quality and privacy of the accommodation form part of the overall offer. Working hours and time off still need to be clearly agreed.

Scope of responsibility
If the role also includes managing staff, contractors, budgets or household administration, the salary should reflect those duties. Clarifying the balance between service and management is essential before beginning the search.

When budgeting to employ a butler, allow for the costs of the complete arrangement. Some are ongoing employer expenses, while others arise when recruiting or setting up the role.

Employer contributions and payroll
In the UK, employer National Insurance and any required workplace pension contributions sit alongside the gross salary. You should also allow for employers’ liability insurance and any payroll administration fees.

Holiday and absence cover
A salaried employee’s paid annual leave is normally included in their annual salary. If your household needs uninterrupted service, temporary cover during holidays or other absences can create an additional expense.

Accommodation and work-related travel
For live-in or travelling positions, consider accommodation, transport and expenses incurred while accompanying the family. Agreeing these arrangements before the appointment helps both parties understand the package.

Recruitment and setting up the role
Recruitment fees are separate from salary. Depending on the appointment, you may also need to budget for relocation, uniforms or training tailored to your household’s service standards.

For a permanent butler appointment, Bespoke Bureau’s recruitment fee is calculated as a percentage of the candidate’s agreed gross annual salary.

Standard recruitment
Our standard fee is 20% of the gross annual salary for UK placements and 25% for overseas placements, plus VAT. A registration fee of £200 plus VAT applies when commencing the search.

Clients choosing our upfront-payment option receive a 50% reduction on the standard placement fee. This brings the rate to 10% for UK placements and 12.5% for overseas placements, plus VAT, with the registration fee waived.

For example, a UK butler appointed on a £60,000 gross annual salary would attract a placement fee of £12,000 plus VAT under the standard option, or £6,000 plus VAT through Fast Track.
